Two journalists working for WTIU and WFIU tested positive for COVID-19 after witnessing the federal executions of inmates at the Terre Haute Penitentiary. Despite sharing their positive results with the Bureau of Prisons, the BOP chose not to inform other journalists and prison staff about the results.

The City of Bloomington sponsored a virtual celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day at 7 p.m. Monday night. The presentation was emceed by James Sanders, chair of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration Commission, and was open to the public through Zoom.

Students returning to Bloomington for the upcoming semester must be tested for COVID-19 once they arrive, with the exception of students who have tested positive within 90 days of their arrival.

A study conducted by the City of Bloomington discovered monitoring the wastewater throughout the city showed increased levels of COVID-19 in areas where outbreaks were detected up to one week later, according to a press release from the city.

The IU Cinema organized a Q&A session with Saudi Arabian filmmaker Haifaa al-Mansour at 4 p.m. Friday. Following the Q&A session, al-Mansour attended a screening of her most recent film, “The Perfect Candidate,” at 7 p.m.

The IU Cinema will show a special “quote-along” screening of “The Sound of Music” at 4 p.m. Sunday. Attendees of the screening are encouraged to dress up as their favorite characters and sing or talk along to the movie as it is playing. This screening marks the fifth-annual quote-along organized at the cinema.

The year is coming to a close, and with its end comes the ever-present specter of finals. To alleviate the burdens of studying, students are welcome to attend any or all of the upcoming screenings at the IU Cinema this month. With 18 events before the end of the semester, there are plenty of opportunities to escape the cold and enjoy musicals, action films, arthouse classics and more.

The Turkish film “Auf der Anderen Seite,” also known as “The Edge of Heaven,” screened at 7 p.m. Monday in the IU Cinema. The film was the third and final entry into the “Between Worlds: Cultural Hybridity in Turkish Films” series.

Saudi Arabia has long been considered one of the most conservative countries in the world in regards to women’s rights. Saudi women were denied the right to vote until the 2015 elections, and until 2017 were forbidden from accessing education or healthcare without the explicit permission of a male guardian. Despite this, the first feature film shot entirely in Saudi Arabia was directed in 2012 by Haifaa al-Mansour, the first Saudi female filmmaker.

While Bloomington residents paraded through the streets in their Halloween costumes and protected themselves from the late-October snow, the IU Cinema was celebrating the holiday with a special double-feature of monster movie classics. Beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday, the IU Cinema screened two iconic Universal Pictures films: “The Mummy” and “The Wolf Man.”

The Alloy Orchestra, once described by Roger Ebert as the “best in the world at accompanying silent films,” according to the official website, brought its musical talents at 7 p.m. Oct. 17 to the IU Cinema to accompany the silent film “Speedy.”

IU Cinema screened the film “The Silence of Others” at 7 p.m. Thursday to kick off the fourth InLight Film Festival. The IFF, which began in 2015 and is returning from a year-long hiatus, is a festival run entirely by IU students that aims to showcase films and filmmakers who tackle issues of human rights.

The 26th annual Lotus World Music and Arts Festival returned to Bloomington during the Sept. 26-29 weekend. The festival’s goal is to explore different cultures through music and art. This year, 28 artists from around the world came to Bloomington to perform.

The film “Ms. White Light," the second from the Bloomington production company Pigasus Pictures, will have its red carpet premiere Oct. 17 at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. Pigasus Pictures, founded by IU alumni Zachary Spicer and John Armstrong, aims to invigorate the film production community within Indiana.

The IU Cinema is searching for a new director to replace founding director Jon Vickers, who has been in charge of the cinema since 2010. During Vickers’ tenure, the cinema has shown over 2,700 public events and issued more than 290,000 tickets to both IU students and film enthusiasts alike.
