Bloomington Mayor John Hamilton proposed a new policy that would allow civilian employees of the police department to respond to some 911 calls at the city council 2024 budget hearing in August. Hamilton said this new plan would help combat the Bloomington Police Department’s staffing shortages.

Walking into the glow of the stage lights at the Musical Arts Center, the sounds of soft jazz only grew louder, revealing a live band tucked into the corner of a set from “The Merry Widow.” Patrons enjoyed the music with drinks and appetizers all while admiring the dark nightclub set, adorned with flourishes of gold and silver— all creating a magical evening at the MAC Gala.

Director Tim Story’s “The Blackening” hit theaters on June 16. I walked into the theater excited to be seeing a low- budget horror-comedy, but not anticipating a fresh plot. However, I was pleasantly surprised when the story shocked and delighted at every turn. The film stars Dewayne Perkins, who doubled as a co-writer of the script alongside Tracy Oliver. Also featured are Jermaine Fowler, Antoinette Robertson, Sinqua Walls, Grace Byers, X Mayo and Melvin Gregg, with Yvonne Orji and Jay Pharoah. It is based on a 2018 short film titled, “3Peat Presents: The Blackening,” also written by Perkins.

Ted Chiang took the stage on June 8 at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater to discuss his own work and speak on modern issues of technology. Chiang was invited to Bloomington by the IU Arts and Humanities Council as part of the Granfalloon Festival, an annual event which celebrates literary author Kurt Vonnegut.

The City of Bloomington issued a press release Monday acknowledging a failure to report samples of April’s total organic carbon in the city’s drinking water. The failure to report was due to an error in shipping.
