Silverthorn follows the team's strategy of staying toward the back of the pack in order to pace themselves and avoid getting caught in accidents. Their goal, after all, was not to win but to avoid last place.

On the day of the race, Ward and Silverthorn warm up on rollers along the edge of the track shortly before taking to the track. Ward said that when he woke up that morning he was excited and nervous and couldn't believe it would all be over in eight hours.

Little 500 participants-to-be do practice laps around the track, where Ward estimates the team logged at least 120 hours before race day. After three months of practicing together as a team, two broken bones, gallons of sweat and hours of laughter, Forest Cycling was ready for their first Little 500.

A couple hundred yards away from their card game hangs a get-to-know-your dorm mates poster on which Clark declared his major as "Loving Life."

Departing from his normally mature-beyond-his-years-demeanor, Ward jokes that it's time to live up to their unofficial team motto (borrowed from Lil' Wayne): "F--- bitches, get money." Then as the nerves kick in he reverts to his default seriousness, assuring his team that "whatever happens, I'm happy. I'm proud of you guys."

Sweet rolls proof before baking Jan. 14 at Sweet Claire bakery, an international breads and pastries shop. Hostetter, belying her former IT career, experimented with her rolls until she decided they bake best in her gas oven when spaced out in the pan. Most of her recipes came out of experimentation - often, she would search for recipes online then modify them over and over until she was satisfied.
