‘Deck the Halls with Local Artists’ will showcase local artists’ work Dec. 1 – Jan. 20 at By Hand Gallery on Kirkwood Avenue. The free exhibit will be open to the public during business hours, and the opening reception will take place 5–8 p.m. Dec. 1, according to By Hand Gallery’s website.
The Blackfork Bestiary is Robert Langham’s photographic collection of insects and animals. The collection will be on display Dec. 1 – Jan. 27 at Pictura Gallery inside of the FAR Center for Contemporary Arts on Fourth Street. The collection includes photos of animals and insects that are a part of the Blackfork Creek ecosystem in Texas.
NYC Comedian Ben Wasserman brought vulnerability and laughter to Bloomington’s Allen Funeral Home and Crematory on Oct. 24. During one of the last shows on his independent, cross-country “Live After Death” tour, he hugged an audience member for the first time and taught a retired director of chaplaincy how to employ comedy as a grieving mechanism.
Former Bloomington musicians John P. Strohm and Freda Love Smith met during their teenage years and will return to Morgenstern Books to celebrate Strohm’s recently released album and Smith’s recently published memoir. There will be a conversation, reading and acoustic performance at 6 p.m. Oct. 28 at Morgenstern Books.
Comedian Pete Holmes will perform five shows at The Comedy Attic to celebrate the venue’s 15th anniversary this week. On Oct. 26, the venue will donate all admission costs to the local non-profit organization Cancer Support Community of South-Central Indiana.
The Writers Guild at Bloomington will present IU alum and Chicago-based poet, Dina Elenbogen, from 6:30-8 p.m. Oct. 23 at Morgenstern Books. The free event will focus on the poet’s most recently published work, “Shore.”

Ben Wasserman, an NYC-based comedian, is performing Live After Death, a “part comedy, part group therapy” show, at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Allen Funeral Home and Crematory in the southern side of Bloomington. The comic has been touring funeral homes and cemeteries since September, joking about death.
Songwriter and harpist Mikaela Davis and musician and lawyer John Strohm will perform separate sets Oct. 27 at The Bishop Bar. Tickets are available for $20 or entrance will cost $25 on the day of the show. The 21+ show will begin at 8:30 p.m.
Glad Rags, Chicago psychedelic disco synth pop band, will perform Oct. 25 at The Bishop Bar. They’ll be joined by Bloomington rock bands The Matriarch and SYZYGY. Doors will open at 7 p.m. and the show will begin at 8 p.m. Tickets are available for $10 to audience members ages 18 and up. Spooky Halloween attire is encouraged.
To celebrate the fall season, Bloomington Parks & Recreation will put on a pumpkin launching event 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 21 at Monroe County Fairgrounds. Audience members have to pay $10 per vehicle. Entrance to the event will begin at 11 a.m. and pumpkin launching will start at noon.
