The release of highly-anticipated FREE THE UNIVERSE has been pushed until this April, but all is not lost.After effectively giving their listeners the runaround for a week, Major Lazer attempted to appease the public with the release of their first installment in the LAZER STRIKES BACK mixtape series. This pint-sized mixtape makes up for what it lacks in size with originality, impact and cohesion.Major Lazer & Flux Pavillion start the revengeful project off with a Jack Beats remix of “Jah No Partial,” deeply rooted in moombahton builds, reggae croons and boom-bap percussion.Next we “Get Free” with Amber of Dirty Projectors, while Yellow Claw delivers a trap spin that morphs this into the perfect follow up track. Things slow down for “Original Don” which features The Partysquad on this DGRC remix, but the last song on the project “Look At Where We Are,” shows Major Lazer’s deep understanding of the spectrum of genres that has become EDM.Big things come in small packages, and these four tracks are a promising glimpse into the universe that Diplo as Major Lazer plans on freeing come spring.

While newcomers are encouraged by the title to stay away, they may be the only ones who find this project appealing.“The Prince Is Coming” and “SUCCUBI” bring a fresh dose of originality and more of this is sprinkled throughout the final result. But for returning fans, araabMUZIK’s stand-out piece is “Heaven.” It sounds like a modernized, audible version of a fight scene from “The Matrix,” and we all loved that movie, right?This mix tape shot too high, and with a total of 21 tracks, it appears evident this artist was concerned with quantity rather than quality.While the project is by no means something you need to turn off in order to avoid potential bleeding of the ears, it really doesn’t do much to grab the listener’s attention. It’s better than a lot of mainstream trap production, but not as good as Araabmuzik has the potential to be.

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>Amidst a reunion with a notorious ex-boyfriend, Rihanna’s seventh studio album is as emotionally mixed up as you might expect the songstress’ life to be.“Unapologetic” is RiRi with a better sense of storytelling, while upholding her ability to be so fun, and sound like [she’s] sellin’ rocks, as she said on The-Dream produced “Phresh Off The Runway.”All hail the new queen of pop, R&B, hip-hop, EDM and whatever other genre she decides to dabble in.With the help of monster contributors like Eminem, The-Dream, Kanye West and David Guetta, this album is set for success. Thankfully, Rihanna’s talent doesn’t let the spotlight get stolen from her. “Get It Over With,” is as close to a capella as you’ll encounter on a studio album of this scale, and it gives her some leeway to being an actual musician, rather than a lowbrow superstar. This little ditty also hints at enjoying Colorado’s Amendment 64 before leading into the reggae-inspired “No Love Allowed.”Brilliant.This project takes Rihanna down a new path for the first time in a while. ____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>The city of brotherly love has produced its very own brand of raw street rap with the rise of Maybach Music Group member Robert Williams, also known as Meek Mill.The Maybach lieutenant paints a grimy portrait of distrust, family loss and going after what you desire by any means necessary. “Dreams & Nightmares” is as vicious and aggressive as it is thematic and conceptual. While those are all great things to have, the originality and successful execution of the concept might be up for debate.Expensive MMG productions brought from far and wide (from Jahlil Beats to Boi-1da) bring this piece to Meek’s best “Get Rich or Die Tryin’” impersonation. This premiere studio album delivers in-your-face bangers like the Rick Ross-featuring “Believe It” and eye-opening firecrackers like the titular opener. The latter is so cool that the title isn’t even mentioned, just bars on top of bars.The not-so-subtle but mildly entertaining “Young & Gettin’ It” lays blueprints for holes to appear throughout the project. is not only a part owner of the newly located Brooklyn Nets. He also
designed the team’s new uniform and brought a respectability amongst
players back to the organization, bringing in big bucket stars like
Deron Williams and Joe Johnson.Albeit you don’t have to get down
with the NBA to lead a successful career in the rap game. Rick Ross
compared himself to the New England Patriots on French Montana’s “Pop
That,” but that doesn’t have the same ring to it as Big Sean dropping
“good lordy, whoadie, I just took more shots than Kobe.”October’s
very own Miami Heat fan once said, “Damn, I swear sports and music are
so synonymous. Cause we want to be them, and they want to be us.”I’m
not sure hanging out with a bunch of Kentucky kids will get you there,
Drake. Everybody knows Indiana is the basketball state.Drake
brings up an interesting point. With as much comparing as rappers do to
this sport and the stars who thrive at it, there is little doubt these
artists have the utmost respect for a thoroughbred hooper. On the other hand, do the athletes share the love? Absolutely. The
list is actually unbearably long, but some notable efforts from
athletes in the rap game sound a lot like the former Ron Artest, Delonte
West, Allen Iverson and Shaquille O’Neal.Shaq has even used rap as a platform to express his dislike of former teammate Kobe Bryant.Shaq rapped the ultimate question to Bryant after losing the 2008 NBA Finals without him, “Kobe, how my ass taste?”Maybe

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>The 2012 BET Hip Hop Awards raked in more than 3 million viewers last week and has become the most successful running award show in the hip-hop community for seven years running.The award show aren’t the Courvoisier-laced celebrations we outsiders might expect them to be.As new rappers and producers hit the scene, different labels and subgenres struggle for the reign of power. The artists pumping out big sales and setting new trends will always be viewed by the listening public as the biggest and best. These camps uphold an immense sense of competition amongst one another, and every so often, the boiling pot overflows.The Hip Hop Awards are the stage for these giant personalities to clash.50 Cent stole the spotlight in childish fashion this year. He started hot by getting into a pissing contest with Diddy about who has more money, apparently a touchy subject not to be jested about.Enter Gunplay. The Maybach Music Group affiliate ended up getting bested in some street boxing by Fif’s entourage.He was arrested just after the scuffle began. Unfortunately for him, this arrest led to other charges the Miami-Dade Police Department had been waiting to drop on his head.This wasn’t the night’s only award-winning beef. Young Jeezy the Snowman and Rick Ross the Bawse also expressed their mutual dislike with a good ol’ fashioned entourage scuffle that led to threats of gun violence.As opposing egos led to flaring tempers and displays of hypermasculine physical confrontation, the imagined picture of mob bosses and gangsters running a respectable scene crumbles to pieces.Maybe these guys are just showing us their emotional side, but it seems like they are tarnishing the names they’ve built during their ascent to the top of the rap game.The standard should be set by these figures, and the standard should be set much higher then the less-than-exemplary behavior we witnessed at last week’s BET Awards.Respect isn’t something listeners and fans should be throwing at 20- to 40-year-old men ready to beef it out like they’re on recess.By Patrick Guilfoyle

Yes, that cat belongs to mau5 and its name is Meowingtons.Joel Zimmerman is the man behind the mask, giving us everything we expect and everything we don’t.Not many releases can successfully use samples from Cypress Hill, Imogean Heap and a 1970s alien sci-fi movie, but it seems most fitting for an album that doesn’t really have a title.Zimmerman’s sixth studio album is EDM from all ends of the emotional spectrum. The opening “Superliminal,” delivers a dark, grungy vibe. “Channel 42,” brings the deadmau5 sounds of old. Of course, mau5 brings influences from just about every other form of mainstream music along for the ride.This project is a wonderful display of creativity and pushes the artist’s envelope. If you’re not prepared for a trip outside of the box, this may not be for you, but Daft Punk would be so proud.By Patrick Guilfoyle

Radio stations are no longer able to provide for their significant other the way they used to, and rappers have found a new infatuation.The daily regimen for music fans no longer consists of turning knobs back and forth to catch the latest rumored Tupac and Dr. Dre hit.Contemporary listeners use simplistic and time-efficient means to obtain the precious jewels our favorite artists blast into our ears. Search, download and voilà! You’ve just doubled the size of your digital album collection.The hip-hop mix tape scene floods the online market. iTunes, Spotify, Pandora, hotnewhiphop.com, datpiff.com and a million other mix tape outlets have made it easier than ever for artists to build their brand and fan base.As rappers like A$AP Rocky, Schoolboy Q and Childish Gambino have shown us that a rise tin Internet listeners based on mix tapes and features is music’s newest launching pad. These exemplary artists have created immense buzz with little to no radio time.Radio is in a compromised media position. It is no longer a leading public influence in rap and instead has become little more than a trend-conscious aficionado.With the Internet cornering ease of access, what chance do hype-building and time-delaying disc jockeys like Funkmaster Flex and DJ Kay Slay have? These fellas might want to turn to Darwinism for some inspiration. DJ Drama and DJ Khaled have made careers for themselves as musicians strictly based on their ability to network and throw the hottest producers and rappers into a studio for a finished project they can call their own. These are managerial skills at their finest. Hip-hop fans have been blessed with the most user-friendly means of choosing music we would like to hear, or not hear, on our playlists.It’s up to us, the listeners, to swing the gavel and make a ruling. With the help of an all-star lineup of mega producers, 2 Chainz has created something fairly memorable but unlikely to change much in hip-hop.Except for the Drake-featuring “No Lie” and the Kanye West-featuring “Birthday Song,” the songs are completely lacking in consistent themes, but massive ground is made up with energizing originality and a few humorous jaunts.When participating in the “Based On A T.R.U. Story” experience, be advised: Listeners might find themselves utterly confused and lost when 2 Chainz goes on a rant apparently directed at nobody but himself. Beware of syllables you didn’t know were possible. And if she has a big booty, 2 Chainz will undoubtedly call her Big Booty.Expensive production and aggressive delivery make this release a fun one, but by no means does 2 Chainz’s debut Def Jam album make for more than the occasional eavesdrop.By Patrick Guilfoyle

For example, YouTube Chief Keef’s “I Don’t Like” before Kanye remixed it. Yes, this young man is now signed to Interscope Records.Chris Brown and Drake confirmed their dislike of each other after a bottle-throwing contest at a New York nightclub left innocent bystanders battered and bloodied.Frank Ocean took a giant risk coming out as bisexual in a culture that has a knack for being largely homophobic. His album “Channel Orange” released just after his controversial announcement and went to No. 2 on that week’s pop charts.Aug. 23, way back whenA year ago today, Jay-Z and Kanye West dropped their monstrous “Watch the Throne” collaboration. While it’s setting stones for the future, other great influences deserve some credit, too. In 1999, N.W.A released a reunion song as tribute to Eazy E’s memory. It was the first work the group produced since they split after the 1991 release of “Niggaz4Life.”Up and comers and who’s running the gameThough summer is quickly coming to a close and we haven’t been able to hear the project yet, everyone has been sitting on his or her hands in anticipation of G.O.O.D Music’s “Cruel Summer.” However, don’t expect this label’s reign to last long. Based on everything we’ve gotten a taste of so far, Dr. Dre protégé Kendrick Lamar might steal the spotlight with “good kid, m.A.A.d. city,” coming this fall. ____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>The lights dimmed.Alex Sullivan couldn’t have imagined a better way to celebrate his 27th birthday than a midnight showing of “The Dark Knight Rises.” Before Friday, the idea you could walk into a movie theater and never come out seemed ridiculous.This became Alex’s reality at 12:38 a.m., as James Holmes opened fire on a crowded movie theater in Aurora, Colo. The mass shooting ended the lives of Alex and 11 other theatergoers. Gas canisters thrown into the aisles released smoke into the crowded theater. Some members of the audience were entertained by what they thought was part of the presentation. That changed as the air was riven with bullets. Per usual, the media has responded to the shocking event with a blame game, trying to explain something incomprehensible. The shooting was reminiscent of scenes of random violence in the Dark Knight films, reigniting the debate about violence on film and violence in reality.However, this debate is misguided. There is no narrow avenue of accountability. Though Holmes referred to himself as The Joker to police, the shooting is neither contingent on nor would have been prevented by the abolition of violence from film. The attack has also brought the return of the gun control debate to the forefront of American political dialogue. It is futile to ruminate on the right to bear arms, as for better or worse it is enshrined in our Constitution, but perhaps it is time to have a discussion about the ability to order mass quantities of ammunition online. Holmes legally purchased 6,000 rounds and other weaponry through unregulated websites. Holmes was able to buy the ammo over the Internet without a background check, let alone an inquiry into the purchaser’s mental health. Accordingly, the issue of psychological treatment and care for the mentally ill is has become more salient to dominant culture.American mass media paused to reflect on this question in the wake of the Virginia Tech shooting but failed to motivate any real change.The challenge in the coming months will be to move beyond conversation and to implement measures that prevent similar acts of violence.In the immediate future, the most appropriate response to the tragedy is the refusal to be manipulated by the enigmatic actions of a disturbed individual. Americans must continue to regard the movie theater for what it is: an escape from the mundane and difficult trials of daily life. In the coming weeks, we must focus on the lessons the victims can teach us, rather than attempt to understand the random act of violence. Questions surrounding Holmes’ actions might only reward his desire for attention. Allow the victims to rule the night, not the perpetrator. Allow the experience of moviegoing to emerge unscathed by the tragic shooting.Remember Jessica Ghawi, the 25-year-old aspiring journalist who narrowly escaped a mass shooting in a Toronto mall on a June Saturday, but didn’t survive Aurora. She wrote on her blog after the shooting, “I say all the time that every moment we have to live our life is a blessing. So often I have found myself taking it for granted. Every hug from a family member. Every laugh we share with friends. Even the times of solitude are all blessings. Every second of every day is a gift. After Saturday evening, I know I truly understand how blessed I am for each second I am given.”Let Jessica, Alex and the 10 other victims define this night. Let’s preserve their memory by thinking how we can mitigate the risk of this kind of tragedy.We can do so without suing movie studios or hiding at home. Let’s not lose the magic of cinema to fear.

It might’ve been all the tracks Brown released prior to “Fortune.” Maybe
it’s that half of these tracks sound like cheap versions of his
Grammy-winning album “F.A.M.E.”
It’s not all bad, though. Songs like “Don’t Wake Me Up,” “Trumpet
Lights” and “Mirage (feat. Nas)” bring the originality and depth we
expect from Brown.
Not only are they original, but the songs successfully attack different
genres. They show Brown still has plenty left in the vault.
For the traditionalists, don’t worry! While Usher has suffered criticism
for an embrace of popish-techno dance music, Brown shies away from this
tactic, with the exception of just three songs.
Brown has provided the music world another project to remain relevant
for the time being. Whether the public will grow weary of his tabloid
drama is unknown, but for now, “Fortune” should keep Breezy fans
content.

This Boston-based ball of fun comes with all the right clichés and plenty of things unexpected from the land of misfit toys.Comedic mastermind Seth MacFarlane brings his first silver-screen production to life. “Ted” was written, produced and directed by the “Family Guy” creator.“Ted” stars Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis as a fragile couple constantly battling the hindrances of Ted’s irresponsible lifestyle. Ted, voiced by MacFarlane, was once the biggest thing since sliced bread, but the fame of the magical bear has faded. The living teddy bear turns to a life of hookers, weed and booze, and lifelong pal John Bennett (Wahlberg) can’t say no to temptation.The movie benefits from MacFarlane’s uncanny ability to manipulate pop culture and sustain supremely comical awkwardness. Sprinkle in some classic fart jokes, fat kids and nudity — and what do you have? “Ted,” a film about an overly aggressive, drug abusing Care Bear with an insatiable appetite for causing as many problematic situations as possible.By Patrick Guilfoyle

Shot in black and white, images of 2 Chainz swaggin’ around in a pilot hat and Drake puffing a hookah have never seemed so proper.As expected, this video is a splendid display of modern hip-hop fashion. 2 Chainz rocks leather vests with designer snap-back hats and l ashy scarves, while Drake stays fitted in tank tops and camo-cargos. Kanye would be proud?Drake’s fellow Canadian Director X has been working with major artists like Justin Bieber, Nelly Furtado and The Wanted this year. “No Lie” is another successful notch under his 2012 belt.The popular track is 2 Chainz’s first single off his upcoming album, “Based on a T.R.U. Story.” We’ve seen him “Beez in the Trap” with Nicki Minaj and ride in a “Mercy” with the G.O.O.D. Music crew, and now 2 Chainz will be releasing his first solo project under Def Jam on Aug. 14. Now, he goes forth and gifts us with a 10-minute chef-d’oeuvre; overflow commences.Although “Pyramids” is deceivingly close to two separate works crammed into one, careful transitions and a consistent lyrical theme solidify the sonic bond. Ocean guides the listener from a dream-like experience with ancient Cleopatra back to the grimy world of modern love with a stripper-prostitute.Ocean’s artful command of storytelling builds a concept of drama, betrayal and passion while maintaining a notably abstract touch. His vocal illustration complements his composition that captures a nearly perfect blend of funk, soul and the occasional spurt of EDM.Ocean released a short video that previews the second half of the song while promoting his first solo album, “Channel Orange,” which will supposedly be released by major record label Def Jam on July 17.Make way as another member of Odd Future rises to stardom.By Patrick Guilfoyle

While each song is enjoyable in one way or another, the album does fail to blend its genres cohesively.The LP sees strengths in Usher’s brazen hits but reaffirms its mastery through songs like the Neptunes-produced “Twisted” and the Empire of the Sun-assisted title track.Every electro-inspired Diplo or Swedish House Mafia production finds a counterpart that feels like nothing but the Usher of “Confessions” and “Here I Stand.”Accept it: Usher has always pushed the envelope, but he’s always provided something addicting and lovable. Curren$y has seen deals with No Limit, Def Jam and Cash Money Records, but it seems he’s finally found a home with Warner Bros. and his own imprint, Jet Life Recordings.“The Stoned Immaculate” stays true to Curren$y’s lazy stoner ad-libbing, lacing the package with a sprinkle of upbeat tracks and features from popular artists like Wiz Khalifa and 2 Chainz. The album hasn’t changed Curren$y’s product (which has recently lacked excitement), but it’s definitely given it a makeover.On “The Stoned Immaculate,” he’s found more of a voice than we’ve previously heard from him. “Chasin’ Paper” featuring Pharell shows it. Although it might not be the loudest joint on the album, Curren$y delivers a message, and that’s what he’s been missing.By Patrick Guilfoyle

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>Spoiler alert: Humanity’s beginnings aren’t revealed, but the monsters that kickstarted Ridley Scott’s directing career are.Though a prequel, “Prometheus” tells a tale of its own and leaves room for sequels to follow. The movie opens strong with a compelling theme — the meaning of life. This premise fades quickly as the movie takes a more conventional approach to sci-fi horror. Insert clichés here.Cut to the crew exploring large and dark places, splitting up, touching stuff they shouldn’t, finding slimy phalluses slithering around, getting attacked by them and so forth. The originality comes in the shape of a giant humanoid that appears to be the last survivor on the moon the crew visits.The humanoid looks like a marble carving of a Greek Titan come to life. Once he’s visited and awoken by the crew he decides it’s a good time to destroy Earth with his ship/biological weapon. Unfortunately, there is no convincing plot for what could lead to our end.The two-hour film’s strengths are its convincing performances and stunning special effects. Michael Fassbender brilliantly portrays an android programmed to mimic human emotion. Noomi Rapace impresses as a woman driven not only to survive but to continue her quest for answers.In the end, “Prometheus” tried too hard to do too much, but having too much is probably better than not having enough. Hopefully Scott got the final remnants of his “Alien” movies out of the way and will take us down a path with some substance and answers for the questions raised in “Prometheus.”By Patrick Guilfoyle

Conductor of the choir Jeremih’s smooth crooning complements the preaching of pastors Meek and Drake.The Church of Meek invites all to be forgiven for their sins, imbibe their favorite alcoholic beverages, meet nice women, treat them cordially (cough, cough) and essentially do some all-around “balling out.” The three artists collide on this track for a surprisingly balanced attack. Though Drake usually steals the spotlight on his features, it seems hard to picture this song without Meek’s hook and Jeremih’s accompaniment. The preaching happens over bouncy piano chords, boom-bap percussion and pipe organs blasting over the main chorus into the next verse. Drake and Meek spend the majority of their breath on braggadocio, and nobody doubts any of their statements. The hot song comes with the arrival of Meek Mills’ newest mixtape, “Dreamchasers 2,” hosted by DJ Drama.
