On Feb. 1, a former member of their team, Michael "Goose" Giesler, died suddenly on the ice at a practice. Junior John Gerhan, usually No. 29, wore Giesler's jersey in his memory. The two grew up in the same town in Minnesota and played hockey for rival high schools. When they met in the hockey community in Bloomington, they became best friends. Most of the IU Hockey players lived together or near one another on Dunn Street in Bloomington. Giesler still hung out with them even though he had decided not to play this season to finish his degree at Ivy Tech Community College. Caitlin O'Hara
