Nolden named IU Scholar of the Month

Sophomore outfielder Will Nolden has been named IU Scholar-Athlete of the Month for January, this afternoon. After redshirting in the 2011 season, the sophomore played in 50 games last season, starting in 38 of them in either right or left field. He played in two of the three games to open the season this past weekend, recording two hits while his team went 2-1 in the opening weekend series. Last year, Nolden got progressively better as the season wore along.

Travis and Bell earn Big Ten honors

Sophomore infielder Sam Travis and freshman pitcher Evan Bell were named Big Ten player of the week and Co-Big Ten freshman of the week respectively, this afternoon. Travis took home his third career Big Ten player of the week award after going 7-12 in IU's first three games of the year. The Illinois native had a .706 on-base percentage and had a hit in each of the three games. He also had a 1.167 slugging percentage and a 1.873 OPS.

Crean, players talk Purdue game

Saturday afternoon, the IU men's basketball team will take on in-state rival Purdue at 2 p.m. in Assembly Hall for the second meeting of the two Indiana schools.

Schwarber And Purdue

While my feature story about the 2013 IU baseball season -- scheduled to run tomorrow -- covered IU's increased pitching depth, I asked sophomore catcher Kyle Schwarber what he thought about the way the Hoosiers' 2012 season ended. Though Schwarber won Most Valuable Player honors at the Cape Cod League, he anticipates another matchup with Purdue. "It was more kind of goal-oriented for me because the way it ended, the way personally, I made a mistake in the game," he said.
