Bowman Academy defeated Barr-Reeve 74-52 in the 1A title game, which ended about half an hour ago. Bowman is the most talented team in 1A in quite a while; and maybe ever in my mind. 2012 prospect DeJaun Marrero finished with 17 points. Although he looked lackadaisical at times, he showed great strength under the basket at times.
Matt Painter made the trip back from Reliant Stadium in time to catch the second half. I got some of his thoughts on the current state of high school basketball.
Q: In the midst of all the changes taking place in high school basketball in the state, what is one thing that will remain constant?
Painter: I still think you have the buzz come sectional time. It's such a big deal. Coming from a 3A school, we never won the regional. If you can win your sectional, you really cherish moving on.
Park Tudor and 2012 blue-chipper Kevin Ferrell take on Wheeler in the 2A championship game, starting in about 5 minutes. Park Tudor is coached by former Wright State head coach Ed Schilling, who also spent time as an assistant under John Calipari at Memphis and in New Jersey with the Nets.
