Here's the release from IU Athletics. There has been speculation about such a move for awhile now, and given Story's apparent desire to be closer to his Los Angeles home, it makes a certain amount of sense.
The Hoosiers were going to lose some potential, regardless of who transferred, but Story was so hit-or-miss most of the season that he was third in the pecking order of freshman guards behind Verdell Jones and Nick Williams. Still, it will be interesting to see where he goes, and into what kind of player he develops.
Short-term for the Hoosiers, this solves their oversigning problem for the incoming recruiting class, unless Tom Crean adds another recruit in the spring period, which begins soon. Read on for the full release.
MALIK STORY WILL LOOK TO PLAY CLOSER TO HOME
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University men's basketball coach Tom Crean has announced that freshman guard Malik Story, a native of Los Angeles, will look to continue his athletic and academic career at an institution closer to his home following the completion of the spring semester.
"I support Malik and his family's decision to go to a school that is closer to his home," said Crean. "As a parent, I understand the need to be close to family. We have encouraged Malik to continue to take advantage of getting his individual workouts in with our team and to utilize the academic support system he has here at Indiana until the end of the semester."
Story graduated from Ribet Academy and also went to Artesia High School. He averaged 5.9 points and 2.2 rebounds in 31 games.
"I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to play basketball at Indiana," said Story. "I have a tremendous amount of love and admiration for Coach Crean, the assistant coaches and my teammates. This was a very emotional decision for me, but I am blessed to have a tremendous support system in my family at home and I want to be able to share my collegiate experiences with them."
