The following is a press release written by Carter Pritchett.
Adulting Legally gives college students and young adults a practical guide to the legal problems that show up fast — police encounters, landlords, student discipline, debt, insurance, and more.
What is Adulting Legally?
Adulting Legally is an approachable guide designed to give college students and young adults the basic legal knowledge they often aren't taught. The 158-page legal guide teaches important legal concepts that frequently surround college life. The book discusses talking to the police, Fourth Amendment privacy rights, self-defense, marijuana law, tenant contracts, protests on campus, and other important related laws and regulations.
Have you ever had the police come to your door because the music is too loud? Have you ever been pulled over and not known what to say? Have you ever wondered when you can tell a police officer no? If so, this book is for you.
The book is dedicated to teaching college students the information they might need to understand and protect their rights as young adults. To learn more about Adulting Legally, visit https://bandbpublishing.com/adulting-legally/
How the Book Came to Be
Adulting Legally was written by attorney and Indiana University graduate Justin Boren with significant contributions from Indiana University student Carter Pritchett. The idea for the book started after Pritchett finished an internship at Boren, Oliver, & Coffey, the criminal defense firm of author Justin Boren. At lunch at the end of the internship, Pritchett made the comment that there is a lot of basic legal knowledge that college students simply don’t know, even himself as a Criminal Justice major. This struck both of them as a problem. That one conversation at lunch eventually turned into what is now Adulting Legally: The College Handbook That the Dean, Police, and Government Forgot to Give You.
Pritchett helped develop the original concept and outline for the book, identifying the legal issues that would be most relevant to college students and young adults. He researched topics including police encounters, landlord-tenant issues, privacy laws, alcohol laws, and student rights, helping shape the book into an approachable resource for readers with little or no previous exposure to the law.
Those topics were chosen with a simple reality in mind: over the next few years, college students will find themselves in situations they never expected to be in, and knowing their rights can help them make better-informed decisions. The goal of Adulting Legally isn’t to make readers legal experts, but to teach them their basic rights and the common laws they may encounter in everyday life. It also isn’t written like a textbook; the law is broken down into simple, practical terms and explained in a conversational way that feels relevant to everyday life. Adulting Legally is designed to help college students enter adulthood with a better understanding of the laws and rights that may affect them along the way.
