Between Wednesday and Thursday, the Indiana University Police Department received six separate reports of electric scooter thefts, according to a crime notice Thursday.
IUPD received the first report at 8:40 a.m. Wednesday that a lock was cut on a black, electric Hiboy-brand scooter outside Spruce Hall between 2 p.m. Tuesday and 8 a.m. Wednesday.
At 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, IUPD received a report that a foldable electric scooter was stolen, this time on the west side of Spruce Hall, sometime between 2:45 p.m. Sunday and 2 p.m. Wednesday.
At 9:45 p.m. Wednesday, IUPD received another report of a black Segway electric scooter stolen from the Collins Living-Learning Center courtyard. According to the crime notice, the bike lock was cut and the scooter was taken some time between 9 a.m. and 9:45 p.m. Wednesday.
At 10:15 p.m. the same day, IUPD received a report of a black Vicont electric scooter stolen from Teter Quadrangle. The cable was cut sometime between 8:50 p.m. and 10 p.m.
At 11:50 p.m. Wednesday, IUPD received a report that a black Volpam electric scooter was stolen from McNutt Quadrangle between 8:45 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. that day.
At 2 a.m. Thursday, IUPD received a report that a gray NIU electric scooter was stolen from the southeast bike rack on 10th Street outside the Paul H. O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs. The incident occurred at 9:40 p.m. Wednesday.
IUPD received a description of a suspect in connection with the scooter taken from the O’Neill School. According to the crime notice, a tall, thin, white male wearing a black graphic hoodie, ball cap and blue jeans was seen taking the electric scooter at 9:40 p.m. Wednesday. With the male was a “white female with a heavier build and dark hair, wearing a black hoodie and white pants,” the notice read.
The notice listed safety tips, including using a U-lock to secure electric bikes and scooters and parking in well-lit and frequently used areas like designated bicycle racks or storage lockers. It also recommended never leaving a bicycle, electric bicycle or scooter unlocked and unattended and reporting suspicious and concerning behavior by calling 911.
