Former Indiana football quarterback Brendan Sorsby is under NCAA investigation for making thousands of bets via a gambling app while redshirting for the Hoosiers as a true freshman in 2022, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported Monday

In 2022, Sorsby appeared in a game against Penn State –– his lone appearance that season. Throughout the season, he had placed bets placed on Indiana to win. However, Thamel reported Sorsby did not make a bet on the one game he played.

Sorsby also spent 2023 with the Hoosiers, making seven starts. During his time at Indiana, Sorsby accumulated 1,595 passing yards and 15 touchdowns through the air, before transferring to the University of Cincinnati.

After throwing for 2,800 yards and 27 touchdowns as a Bearcat last season, Sorsby transferred to Texas Tech University as ESPN’s No. 1 transfer in the 2026 cycle. After his commitment, ESPN reported Sorsby was set to make over $5 million at Texas Tech this year.

In a statement Monday, Texas Tech announced Sorsby would take an immediate indefinite leave of absence from the program and enter a residential treatment program for a gambling addiction.

“We love Brendan and support his decision to seek professional help,” Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire said in a statement to ESPN. “Taking this step requires courage, and our primary focus is on him as a person. Our program is behind Brendan as he prioritizes his health.”

Sorsby, who enters his senior season, could face permanent loss of collegiate eligibility if it is confirmed he bet on his own school’s games, per NCAA guidelines.

“Today, we were made aware of a media report regarding a student-athlete who last competed for our football program in 2023,” Indiana University Athletics said in a statement to the IDS on Monday. “Indiana University has no further comment at this time.”
