Local live music this week: from the ‘80s to indie folk

With midterms coming to an end, this week is the perfect opportunity to take a break from classes and listen to some live music. From ‘80s music to indie folk bands, there is something for everyone of all tastes and ages. 

Wednesday 

IU student band Opal will perform at The Bluebird. The 21-and-up event will start at 10 p.m., and tickets will cost $12.43. The band, composed of IU students, plays classic rock music and performs at The Bluebird frequently.  

Thursday 

The IU Auditorium will host Silkroad Ensemble with Rhiannon Giddens. The show will start at 7:30 p.m., and tickets will cost $34 to $80 depending on seat selection in the auditorium. Student tickets are also available for $24 to $52. Silkroad Ensemble is a musical collective that promotes cross-cultural music. The musicians at the event will dive into music traditions from each of their cultures from Morocco to India.  

Friday 

The Bluebird will host Emo Nite starting at 9 p.m. Tickets for the 21-and-up event will cost $18.65. Emo Nite is a touring DJ concept highlighting regional DJs. Though the bar often doesn’t know who the DJ will be until the event, Emo Nite typically promises 2000s-era pop-punk, emo and alternative rock music.  

Saturday 

The Postmodern Jazz Quartet will perform at the Orbit Room. The event will start at 6 p.m., and tickets will cost $5.67 with a food or drink purchase required. The Bloomington jazz group’s show will be open to all ages.  

Jacob Perez and jfbrontosaurus will perform at the Orbit Room. The show will start at 8:30 p.m., with Perez performing before jfbrontosaurus. Tickets for the all-ages show will cost $13.60 with a food or drink purchase required. The two artists are similar in style, with Perez playing mainly indie-folk music and jfbrontosaurus primarily indie. 

Hairbangers Ball, an ‘80s cover band, will play at The Bluebird. The 21-and-up show will start at 9 p.m.. Tickets will cost $12.43. The Chicago-based band was formed in 2001 and performs "Hair Rock" tributes.

Sunday 

Abe Partridge will present both his art and music at the Monroe County History Center. The event will go from 4-8 p.m., with tickets costing $23.44. The show will include showings of his mixed media artwork that involves carving into dried tar and then painting on it, along with two 45-minute musical sets. Partridge plays mainly indie folk, southern gothic and americana music.
