Indiana baseball’s game against Northern Kentucky University that was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon was cancelled due to incoming weather, including a high temperature of 56 degrees and rain per a release from Indiana Athletics. The contest is not currently scheduled to be played later.
The Cream and Crimson defeated Western Kentucky University 7-3 on Sunday in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Indiana redshirt freshman catcher Brayden Ricketts had three hits in three at-bats — including two home runs, the first two of his career — and drove in five runs in the Indiana’s fifth win of the year. Indiana split the four-game weekend series against the Hilltoppers.
Ricketts was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Monday, per another release from Indiana Athletics following his performance against Western Kentucky. The Brampton, Ontario, native hit .600 (9-for-15) with seven RBIs during the four-game series against Western Kentucky. He also chipped in a hit and a run scored against Xavier University on Feb. 25 in Indiana’s 10-4 win.
Ricketts is the 14th Indiana player to be named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week since 2019 when current head coach Jeff Mercer took over for the Hoosiers.
The redshirt freshman catcher has now improved his batting average to .381 in 10 starts this year. He also holds an eight-game hitting streak and has tallied multi-hit games in four of Indiana’s last six contests.
The Hoosiers’ next series is against Washington from March 6-8 at Bart Kaufman Field in Bloomington, which will open Big Ten play for Indiana. The series will be streamed on Big Ten+. However, the weather forecast calls for a 50% chance of rain on March 6 with possible thunderstorms, according to the National Weather Service.
