The following is a press release written by Kristy Taylor for the Monroe County Humane Association.

Monroe County Humane Association (MCHA) has received a grant from Lilly Scholars Network to continue the expanded Spay/Neuter Assistance Program launched with LSN support last year. This funding allows MCHA to help more families access affordable spay and neuter services for their pets.
The program primarily serves Monroe County residents. With support from Lilly Scholars Network, vouchers will again be available to residents in Greene, Owen, and Lawrence Counties. New in 2026, residents of Martinsville and Orange County are also eligible to apply.
In 2025, MCHA issued 339 spay and neuter vouchers. Lilly Scholars Network funding supported 150 of those.
Spaying and neutering pets is one of the most effective ways to reduce pet overpopulation and ease pressure on local shelters. These procedures also improve the health and well being of pets. Spayed and neutered animals are less likely to roam, often show fewer behavioral issues, and face a lower risk of certain cancers.
Animal shelters across the region are full. Choosing to spay or neuter your pet is a direct way you can help reduce overcrowding and support healthier pets in your community.
Through this program, pet owners who receive government assistance or meet income eligibility guidelines can apply for a voucher to help offset the cost of surgery—$30 toward a cat spay/neuter and $50 toward a dog spay/neuter. Vouchers can be redeemed at any participating spay/neuter surgery organization or veterinary office, and pet owners are encouraged to confirm participation when scheduling surgery.
“This support from Lilly Scholars Network allows us to reach more families who want to do the right thing for their pets but need help making it possible,” said Andrew Krebbs, Executive Director of Monroe County Humane Association. “Spay and neuter services prevent unwanted litters, reduce pressure on local shelters, and keep pets healthier.”
Those interested in obtaining a voucher can visit monroehumane.org/snap, stop by MCHA’s Animal Care Campus during regular business hours, or email receptionist@monroehumane.org for more information.
MCHA’s Spay and Neuter Assistance Program also receives support from City of Bloomington through Jack Hopkins Social Services grant, Monroe County through the Sophia Travis Community Service Grant, and Pet Friendly Services.
