The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office booked a Bloomington man Sunday in connection with a fatal Feb. 25 car crash, according to a Sunday press release.
James Caudell, 48, was transported to Monroe County Jail on Sunday on preliminary charges of reckless homicide, operating while intoxicated causing death, operating while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury and neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury.
The crash occurred near South Rockport Road and West Stansifer Court on Feb. 25. The Monroe County Major Crash Investigation Team’s preliminary investigation indicated that a northbound Subaru, driven by Caudell, crossed left into the southbound lane, colliding head-on with a Kia, the release said.
The Kia’s driver was identified Thursday as 74-year-old Bloomington resident Theadora Wellman, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 7–year old was also in the Subaru and sustained serious injuries. They were flown to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis but have now been discharged.
A third vehicle, a Toyota, hit vehicle debris from the initial crash.
Caudell was transported to the hospital the night of the crash for treatment and was released Sunday, the release said. He was immediately taken into custody by the sheriff's office and is now in the Monroe County Jail.
The sheriff’s office said Caudell consented to a chemical test while in the hospital but is still awaiting toxicology results.
The investigation is ongoing.
