Local live music: album releases and mariachi music

There are plenty of live music opportunities this week around Bloomington. From an upcoming album release to a mariachi performance, there’s a wide variety of musical genres that anyone can enjoy.  

Wednesday 

Bloomington band American Pirates, known for its jazz-folk style, will kick off its album release tour at the Orbit Room. The show, which is open to all ages, will start at 8 p.m. and tickets will cost $11.33. The album, which will be released Wednesday on Bandcamp, is titled “What a Friend” and explores themes of friendship through a folk and jazz sound.  

Thursday 

Chicago-based group Mariachi Herencia de México will perform at the IU Auditorium this Thursday. The show starts at 7:30 p.m., and tickets range from $34 to $71, or $28 to $58 for students, depending on the seating. The group is a two-time Latin Grammy nominee and combines traditional mariachi music while also creating new sounds.  

American Pirates will continue its album release tour starting at 9:30 p.m. at The Bishop Bar. This show will be 21 and up, and tickets will cost $10 per person.  

Friday 

The American Pirates album release tour continues Friday. This show will start at 6 p.m. at Elks Lodge. While the performance is free, audience donations are encouraged.  

Morgenstern Books & Café will host a night of live music with the Postmodern Jazz Quartet, a jazz group that plays a variety of jazz music. The event will last from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and will be free for all ages.   

Pianist and singer-songwriter Vienna Teng will also perform at Morgenstern Books, with special guest Kay Krull, a local Bloomington songwriter. The show will begin at 7 p.m., with tickets starting at $32.07. Teng plays indie-folk music.   

Bloomington native band Six Foot Blonde will perform at The Bluebird. The 21-and-up show will start at 9 p.m., with tickets costing $12.43 per person. The group, which consists of IU alumni, plays indie rock music, and its 2024 debut album is titled “Ask Me How I Am.” 

Saturday 

American Pirates will conclude its album release tour at the Musical Arts Center Room 066. The free show will start at 7 p.m.  

The Bloomington Winter Blues Festival will be at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. The show will start at 7 p.m., and tickets cost $21.82 per person. The festival will include blues artists Mike Milligan and Steam ShovelKing Bee and the Stingers and AndrFaye and Scott Ballantine 

The Bluebird will host a ‘90s country night with Indiana country artist Jake Dodds. The night will begin at 9 p.m., with tickets costing $12.43.
