After the weekend snow, escape the cold and warm up with these live music opportunities around Bloomington. With plenty of different genres, there are events for all different kinds of music lovers.
Wednesday
Mihaela Martin and Chih-Yi Chen will perform a guest and faculty recital at Auer Hall from 8-9:30 p.m. Martin is a Romanian-born violinist who has performed both solo and in collaboration with many artists. She is currently a professor of violin at the University of Music in Cologne. Chen is a professor of music in collaborative piano as well as the associate chair of the chamber and collaborative music department at the Jacobs School of Music.
Thursday
Rock band Umphrey’s McGee will play at The Bluebird. The band of Indiana natives, originally from South Bend, will start at 8 p.m. with tickets for the 21-and-up show costing $57.25. The band plays a mix of originals and covers, typically in the rock genre, although it experiments with other styles as well.
Friday
The Constellation Playhouse will host Transparent – a celebration of jazz and community. Transparent is a set of compositions created and recorded through the Jazz Road Creative Residencies program, which provides financial support for professional jazz artists. The performers of the event are internationally-known jazz musicians Tom Clark, Peter Kienle, Monika Herzig, Jeremy Allen and Karina Colis.
Through the melodies and improv, the jazz instrumentals will tell the stories of parents and caregivers of transgender children. The event begins at 7:30 p.m., and tickets cost $23.87 for general admission and $18.74 for students and seniors. Children under 10 get in for free.
Welcome to the Neighborhood, a Bloomington cover band that often plays rock music, will play at The Bluebird. The local band will start at the 21-and-up venue at 9 p.m., and tickets for the show will cost $12.43.
Saturday
The Buskirk-Chumley Theater will host Airwaves for all: A Benefit for WFHB. The event will run from 6-11 p.m. with tickets costing $21.82. The benefit will include five different bands throughout the night, starting with KP & the WLGs at 6 p.m. and followed by The Hammer & The Hatchet, Jeff Shew & the Late-Night Crew, Coyote Motel and The Dynamics. All proceeds from the concert will go to WFBH, Bloomington’s community radio station.
Up-and-coming bluegrass band Mountain Grass Unit will play at The Bluebird starting at 8 p.m. The 21-and-up show will cost $25.39 to attend. The band plays original music and covers, blending bluegrass with country, jazz, funk, rock and metal.
