Former Indiana football assistant Tino Sunseri parts ways with UCLA

UCLA offensive coordinator Tino Sunseri and the program have mutually parted ways, a university official told the Los Angeles Times on Tuesday.

Sunseri and the Bruins got off to an 0-4 start and averaged just 14.2 points per game this season — the third lowest in the Football Bowl Subdivision. The Bruins also rank 117th in the nation with 321.2 yards per game. The school already dismissed head coach DeShaun Foster and parted ways with defensive coordinator Ikaika Malloe this season.

Before joining the Bruins in the offseason, Sunseri spent the 2024 campaign as Indiana football’s quarterback coach and co-offensive coordinator. During his time with the Hoosiers, Sunseri coached former Indiana quarterback Kurtis Rourke to over 3,000 passing yards, while setting a single-season program record 29 touchdowns through the air.

While offensive coordinator Mike Shanahan called plays for the Hoosiers’ offense in 2024, Sunseri played a key role in the development of the passing game, guiding the program to its first College Football Playoff appearance. Sunseri was the only Indiana assistant coach to leave the program following its historic first campaign under head coach Curt Cignetti.

On Dec. 13, 2023, Sunseri followed Cignetti to Bloomington from James Madison University. In three seasons as the Dukes’ quarterback coach, Sunseri’s signal callers averaged 3,400 yards passing, 32 touchdown passes and 256 completions per season. All three quarterbacks he coached at James Madison earned conference player of the year honors.

The Bruins will now turn to tight ends coach Jerry Neuheisel as their offensive play caller against No. 7 Penn State on Saturday. Indiana and UCLA are set to compete against each other Oct. 25 at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington.
