The Indiana Daily Student (IDS) was recognized for its exceptional commitment to community reporting at the Bloom Magazine Community Awards ceremony, held Sept. 19 at the Woolery Mill. The IDS received the award for Support of Local Journalism, honoring its expanded coverage of local issues and fearless reporting amid ongoing challenges and controversies in the media landscape.
The award was presented by Malcolm Abrams, editor and publisher of Bloom Magazine, following an introduction by Cassaundra Huskey, executive publisher of Bloom.
The event program highlighted the IDS’s growing role in Bloomington’s news ecosystem:
“As The Herald-Times’ local coverage has been significantly diminished, the IDS has taken on a larger role in the community with its coverage of events and its investigative reporting. And, despite uncertain funding and attacks from state government officials, the IDS has been fearless in reporting on the many swirling controversies at IU.”
Andrew Miller and Mia Hilkowitz accepted the award on behalf of the IDS. Much of the work recognized was published under last year’s co-editors-in-chief, Marissa Meador and Jacob Spudich, whose leadership helped strengthen the paper’s community focus.
The Indiana Daily Student, founded in 1867, is an independent, student-run news organization serving Indiana University and the Bloomington community. The publication has a long tradition of producing impactful reporting and training future journalists.
