Precautionary water boil advisory affects 1,850 Monroe County households

B and B Water Project recommended Tuesday that all customers boil their drinking water due to a “substantial” water main break. The company services approximately 1,850 households in Monroe County, company representative Jeff Farmer said.

The water company decided to implement the boil water advisory in partnership with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, according to a post made on the B and B website.

Boil water advisories are put into place when the water pressure in the main drops below 20 pounds per square inch, leaving the main vulnerable to bacteria from groundwater or dirt.

Farmer anticipates the advisory will be lifted in the next 24 to 48 hours, after drinking water tests that detect the presence of bacteria come back clean.

Those placed under the advisory should boil cooking and drinking water for three to five minutes before use. B and B also asked that households conserve water as much as possible.
