Local music this week: From culture to country

As classes begin picking up, it can be good to take a break and do something fun. Listening to live local music is a great way to relax from your week of work. 

Tuesday 

Honky Tonk Tuesday is happening at Blockhouse Bar again from 8:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Tickets cost $5, and can be purchased online. This event is 21+.  

Thursday 

The Lotus World Music and Arts Festival begins Thursday. The first day will feature Krista Detor Band from 7:10 p.m. to 8 p.m. and following that Terrance Simien & the Zydeco Experience from 8:15 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. Tickets to the Thursday night opening concert cost $31.05, or you can buy a pass to go to more than one day of the event.  

The all inclusive pass, which allows access into the festival Thursday through Sunday, costs $133.61. Discounts are available for seniors, veterans and student. The senior and veteran discount brings ticket prices down to $107.97. The student and teen discount brings it down to $73.10. Children 12 and under can attend the festival for free. 

Weekend passes, which allow access to all performances Friday and Saturday, are available for the same price as the all inclusive pass. 

Friday 

The Lotus World Music and Arts Festival will continue Friday with 15 musicians from all over the world playing a myriad of different music. There will be bands performing at different venues around town including the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, Sixth Street between College Avenue and Walnut Street, the Waldron Arts Center and First Christian Church. You can purchase tickets for just the Friday showcase for $72.07. Seniors and veterans can purchase at $57.71, and students and teens can purchase tickets for $37.20. 

Saturday 

Lotus Fest continues into Saturday with around 20 musicians from around the world. Saturday will also include dance workshops, musician interviews and film footage. The interviews and film footage will take place in the Monroe County Public Library Auditorium.  Single-day tickets for Saturday will cost the same as Friday tickets. 

Additionally, alternative/indie band The Brook and The Bluff will perform at The Bluebird at 8 p.m. Saturday. Tickets cost $32.64 and the event is 21+ 

Sunday 

For the last day of Lotus Fest, Cathy Fink, Marcy Marxer and Chao Tian will perform a set from 3:05 p.m. to 4 p.m. Later, singer Natu Camara will perform from 4:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. in the closing concert of the festival at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. Tickets for just Sunday will cost $25.92.  

Listening to local music is a great way to get out in the community and hear new music you may not have known about before. The Lotus Music Festival happens every year and is a perfect excuse to get out and learn about music from other cultures.
