BREAKING: Joe VanDeventer selected in Republican Monroe County Commissioner primary

Voters selected Joe VanDeventer as the Republican nominee for the District 3 seat on the Monroe County Board of Commissioners. He received 65.9% of the vote. 

VanDeventer ran against Paul White Sr. for the nomination. White received 34.1% of the vote 

VanDeventer is the city of Bloomington assistant public works director and director of street operations. Before joining the city of Bloomington Street Division, VanDeventer worked for the Monroe County Highway Department from 1986. He has also served on the board of directors for the Monroe County 4-H program. According to a press release, VanDeventer’s top priorities are creating new jobs and improving lives for residents in Monroe County. 

White is a bus driver for Area 10 Agency on Aging, a nonprofit organization that provides transportation and services for seniors, persons with disabilities and caregivers. He has served on the Monroe County Human Rights Commission, Monroe County Traffic Commission and the Monroe County Waste Reduction District. He is also a volunteer coach for the Monroe County Special Olympics. 

The Monroe County Board of Commissioners’ responsibilities include auditing and authorizing claims against the county, maintaining county properties, supervising the maintenance of county roads and bridges, and implementing solid waste management strategies. Commissioners can also appoint members to fill positions on various county boards, committees and commissions.  

The representative elected to the District 3 seat will represent Benton Township, Clear Creek Township, Salt Creek Township, Washington Township and parts of Perry and Polk townships. Three Democrats Penny Githens, Jody Madeira and Steve Volan are also competing for their party’s nomination for the District 3 seat.
