No. 21 Indiana men’s basketball beat its in-state rival, No. 1 Purdue, 79-74 Saturday behind senior forward Trayce Jackson-Davis, who scored 25 points and added seven rebounds and five blocks.
Indiana fans stormed the court after the victory, the second time in two years that the Hoosiers have beaten a top-5 Purdue team in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
Despite Purdue’s late comeback attempt, Indiana hung on to finish the upset. Indiana entered halftime with a 50-35 lead, but Purdue quickly cut it down to 5 points out of the half.
Down the stretch, the Boilermakers turned to junior forward Zach Edey, as they have all season. Edey scored 18 of his 33 points in the half and the Hoosiers had little answer.
Purdue also cleaned up the turnovers, committing just five after turning it over 11 times in the second half, slowing down Indiana’s fast break offense that pushed the score up early.
Freshman guard Jalen Hood-Schifino scored 16 points, including a dunk as time expired to ice the game for Indiana, and had four assists. Junior guard Trey Galloway added 11 points.
