By Hand Gallery will present their new exhibit, “3AM,” by iron and steel sculptor Bert Gilbert starting this Friday at their location in Fountain Square Mall at 101 W Kirkwood Ave.

There will be an opening reception and gallery walk from 5-8 p.m. on May 6. The exhibit will be open and free to the public from May 6-26.

“3AM” will feature new cast iron and mixed media sculptures by Gilbert. Gilbert builds his work on the cast iron elements he produces during his annual artist residency at the iron casting Sculpture Trails in Solsberry, Indiana, according to the press release.

For his mixed media works, Gilbert, uses recycled iron forecasting, scrap, and reclaimed steel on welded pieces and repurposed building materials.

Along with only forming the models and creating the molds, Gilbert actively participates in

the pour-casting process of sculpting, according to the press release.

“In my recent pieces, I have been casting more and more (plastic) packing materials,” Gilbert said. “This detritus of our online consumer culture, with its soft corpulent forms, seems an apt metaphor for the empty opulence of consumerism and surely a bellwether for future archaeologists defining our culture.”

By Hand Gallery is a locally owned, cooperative gallery consisting of 13 artisan members, according to their website. By Hand Gallery has been in the Bloomington community for over 40 years and sells artworks that are of good design and quality craftsmanship, according to their website.

By Hand Gallery is open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m to 5:30 p.m. and Sundays from 12-4 p.m.
