Indiana football junior running back David Ellis had surgery on his ankle and will miss the remainder of the season, head coach Tom Allen said in a press conference Monday.

Ellis had three carries for 12 yards in 2021. In 21 career games, Ellis had 28 rushes for 126 rushing yards and 308 receiving yards on 28 catches. Ellis returned 28 kicks for 579 yards as a freshman.

Ellis was set to be the backup running back to graduate student Stephen Carr after sophomore Tim Baldwin Jr. entered the transfer portal last week.

Junior Sampson James transferred before the season began, meaning Carr is the only remaining scholarship running back on the roster. Junior Davion Ervin-Poindexter is Indiana’s next leading rusher with 57 yards on eight carries.
