Sophomores Clay Merchent and Drew Salyers of IU men’s golf earned spots in the U.S Men’s Amateur Championship after participating in the 121st U.S. Amateur Championship Sectional Qualifying tournament Monday at The Moraine Country Club in Dayton, Ohio.

Participation in amateur tournaments during the summer is a part of the team’s offseason program while the coaching staff focuses on recruiting, head coach Mike Mayer said in May

Salyers won the tournament with a score of 4-under-par 138 after 36 holes, converting nine birdies and an eagle.

Merchent, the reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Year, took second place after carding a 2-under-par 140.

The U.S. Men’s Amateur Championship will take place Aug. 9-15 at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania.
