Indiana women’s tennis opened its fall 2026 season this weekend by earning six wins and three losses in the top bracket of play at the Debbie Southern Furman Fall Classic tournament in Greenville, South Carolina.
The three-day tournament at the Mickel Tennis Center featured Indiana, the University of Alabama, Furman University, Georgia Tech University, Illinois, Maryland, North Carolina State University, the University of South Carolina and Wake Forest University. Players competed in singles and doubles using an eight-player compass draw format.
Four Hoosiers competed in the tournament: senior Chase Boyer, junior Nicole Sifuentes, sophomore Ameia Sorey and junior Gabby Gregg.
Sorey finished the weekend with two singles victories after losing her first match to North Carolina State’s Roisin Gilheany in three sets Friday. She responded with a 7-6 (7-4), 1-6, 7-5 victory over Furman’s Elle Warren on Saturday and a 6-2, 7-5 victory against Georgia Tech’s Given Roach on Sunday.
Sorey enters her second season with the Hoosiers. She earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors following her collegiate debut at the Debbie Southern Furman Fall Classic last season. Before joining Indiana, Sorey won the Florida Class 4A singles state championship and was named the Miami Herald’s Dade Tennis Player of the year in 2023.
Sifuentes earned a singles victory Saturday after falling to NC State’s Jasmine Conway 6-3,7-5 Friday. Sifuentes defeated Georgia Tech’s Sabritt Dozier in three sets, winning 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
Sifuentes, a Monterrey, Mexico, native joined the Hoosiers with extensive experience in International Tennis Federation junior competition. She reached a career-high ITF junior ranking of No. 251 before beginning her collegiate career at Indiana.
Sifuentes and Sorey also found success together in doubles play. The duo earned victories over Wake Forest’s Catherine Rennard and Heidi Bulger and Georgia Tech’s Roach and Eleni Karantali on Friday. They closed out doubles play Saturday with a 7-6 (7-5) victory over Georgia Tech’s Dozier and Rishitha Basireddy.
Boyer and Gregg also paired together in the first doubles flight. The duo fell 6-4 to Furman’s Sasha Dimitrov and Bianca Ceroni on the opening day of the competition.
Gregg joined Indiana this year after spending two seasons at the University of San Diego, where she went 24-17 in singles play. Originally from Sydney, Australia, Gregg was a top 10 Australian junior and reached a career-high ITF ranking of No. 191.
Boyer, an Evansville, Indiana, native, was a four-star recruit out of Reitz Memorial High School and has earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar All-American honors twice with the Hoosiers.
Both players also competed in singles, with Gregg in the second flight and Boyer in the fifth. Gregg opened singles play with a 6-3, 6-0 loss to Taylor Goetz of Georgia Tech, while Boyer battled through three singles matches over the course of the tournament. Boyer lost to Furman’s Shreya Amirichetty 7-6 (7-1), 4-6, 6-0 Friday and Georgia Tech’s Eleni Karantali 6-3, 6-2 Saturday before losing to Basireddy 6-4, 6-1 Sunday.
The Hoosiers will return to action Sept. 19 at the ITA All-American Championship in Knoxville, Tennessee. Indiana will then return home for the Hoosier Classic Oct. 2-4 at the IU Tennis Center in Bloomington.
