Big Ten to allow fans at spring sporting events

Fans will be allowed at Big Ten Conference sporting events for the remainder of the season, the conference said in a statement Wednesday.

Local health guidelines will determine attendance policies for individual schools, a change from the previous universal conference policy of limiting attendance to family members of players and coaches.

The Big Ten first allowed fans at its men’s and women’s basketball tournaments in Indianapolis. The men’s tournament at Lucas Oil Stadium allowed 8,000 fans, and the women’s tournament at Bankers Life Fieldhouse allowed 2,500 fans.

IU’s Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall was the only NCAA Tournament site to not have general attendance, instead limiting the crowd to 500 family members and vaccinated health care workers. Purdue’s Mackey Arena allowed a 25% capacity crowd for the tournament after limiting attendance to Big Ten standards during the regular season.

IU has not yet confirmed the number of fans it will allow.
