The Buskirk-Chumley Theater will screen the documentary “The Color of Medicine: The Story of Homer G. Phillips Hospital” at 4 p.m. Sunday.

This 80-minute film details the history of the first teaching hospital west of the Mississippi River to treat black people. The story is told through the eyes of IU alumnus Dr. Earle Robinson Jr., whose father was one of the first 27 interns to graduate from the hospital.

The story includes interviews from staff, patients and leaders, as well as a full history of the hospital from its opening in 1937 to its closing in 1979.

“It's a story on these doctors, this community in St. Louis and how important it was to the community to have a hospital,” said Karen Green Stone, member of the community education and outreach committee of Medicare For All Indiana, which sponsored this screening.

According to the Buskirk-Chumley website, this screening is presented in honor of  Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The film will be followed by a panel led by Robinson and local doctor Tashera Perry.

The doors for this free screening will open at 3:30 p.m.
