IU Board of Trustees approves the option of a test-optional policy

People walk through the Sample Gates on June 27, 2018, near Franklin Hall. IU campuses may no longer require standardized test scores in the admissions process.

IU Board of Trustees approved a policy change Friday affording IU campuses the option to implement a test-optional admission policy, according to an article from the university.

The test-optional policy allows prospective students to choose whether or not their SAT or ACT test scores would be considered in their admissions process. According to an article from the university, faculty leadership from each IU campus may decide whether or not to implement the test-optional policy.

The Bloomington Faculty Council will meet in early 2020 to review potential changes to IU’s admissions policy.

This policy allows admissions review members to assess a student’s high school GPA rather than test performance.

The ACT and SAT tests cost around $50 each, excluding registration fees and the optional writing portions. The test-optional policy seeks to increase accessibility and affordability for prospective students.

This potential policy change would affect students applying for the fall 2021 semester.
