COLUMN: The best books being published this summer

Welcome to chapter 34 of the book column. With summer comes more free time for reading. Whether students are staying in Bloomington, heading home or graduating, everyone needs a good summer read.

For those who love young adult fiction and the dystopian craze of the genre, I suggest two great reads — “The Fates Divide” by Veronica Roth, released April 10, and “War Storm” by Victoria Aveyard.

“War Storm” will be published on May 15, so pre-order it on Amazon now or be ready to run to Barnes & Noble.

Aveyard’s book is the conclusion to a four-book series entitled “Red Queen.” Veronica Roth’s book is the second in a series called “Carve the Mark.”

These novels offer strong female heroines who struggle to change the world around them for the better. They include mystery, love and action.

If school reading has been heavy this semester, check out “Art Starts with a Line.” This book is an interactive adult coloring book that teaches its users the art of line drawing. De-stress and learn a new skill when this book is released July 3.

“Note to Self” by Gayle King is the book adaptation of a popular CBS morning show segment by the same name. This book is a compilation of letters and quotes from celebrities to the show hosts that tell what they would say to their younger selves.

Since it comes out May 8, this book could be a great source of inspiration to graduating Hoosiers.

Do not know what you are doing after college? Don't worry, you will have something to say to your younger self one day, just like the writers in “Note to Self.”

“Note to Self” comes out May 8.

If reading a novel doesn't sound right for summer 2018, try poetry. “Not That Bad” by Roxane Gay will be released May 1. The book is a collection of new and previously published works about rape culture.

“Not That Bad” has been featured on multiple magazines' must-read lists. It is highly anticipated and continues Gay’s well-known style of writing.

Whether it is young adult novels, poetry or art, all students will be able to find great books to read this summer.

Summer is the perfect time of year to get back into reading. Read outside, on the beach, in the car — anywhere.
