Field hockey looks to improve in second weekend of play

spiufh

Coming off a disappointing opening weekend, in which IU field hockey was outscored 11-1 against two ranked opponents, the Hoosiers will hit the road again for another set of games.

IU will visit Pennsylvania for weekend matchups against No. 15 Wake Forest on Friday and Villanova on Monday.

After playing the defending national champions Delaware and No. 9 Louisville last weekend, IU players and coaches are approaching this weekend with the same intensity as their first games of the season.

Coach Amanda Janney said the tough competition will help the team going forward.

“I like to schedule tough," Janney said. "I want us to become a top-20 program. There are a lot of benefits coming out of the tests last weekend."

Janney is a Wake Forest alum, and with seven IU players having been born in Pennsylvania, the weekend is a kind of homecoming for the IU team.

Monday's game has IU traveling to Villanova to play the Wildcats.

This weekend's difficult games will require leadership from IU seniors, and senior goalkeeper Katie Johnson said she is ready to step up.

“I feel myself a lot more vocal," Johnson said. "A lot of the younger girls are looking up to me. I’m just trying to instill confidence in the younger group.”

Not only will IU be looking at its seniors to carry the team through the weekend, but also the play from the IU attack, especially in the midfield.

Sophomore midfielder Ciara Girouard scored IU’s only goal last weekend, and she is ready for the next challenges ahead.

“I feel like I can do a lot more things," Girouard said. "I am starting to see the potential in myself. My biggest improvement would be the confidence factor."
