IU men's soccer began the 2017 season with a 2-0 win against the Cal Poly Mustangs on Friday in the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament in South Bend.

The Hoosiers started out quick, scoring a goal in the eighth minute. IU junior defender Andrew Gutman scored the goal, while IU freshman forward Thomas Warr got his first collegiate assist. Then, in the 72nd minute, the Hoosiers scored again as IU freshman forward Mason Toye scored his first goal in IU's colors.

IU outshot Cal Poly eight to five and had nine corner kicks to Cal Poly’s two. Gutman and Toye both finished with two shots, the most for the Hoosiers. Both of Gutman’s shots were counted as shots on goal. IU’s backline held strong as no Cal Poly player had multiple shots.

IU Coach Todd Yeagley had to make important opening-day decisions at three position battles for IU.

In goal, it was freshman Trey Muse who got the start and played all 90 minutes. Muse made three saves on the night.

Starting the match at right back was sophomore Jordan Kleyn. At striker, it was Warr who picked up the start.

The Hoosiers will finish tournament play at 11:30 a.m. Sunday against San Diego.
