After signing her National Letter of Intent in November and graduating from Evansville Mater Dei High School a semester early in December, right-handed pitcher Emily Goodin will join IU softball for the 2017 season.

IU softball head coach Michelle Gardner announced Friday that Goodin has already enrolled at IU and will be able to join the team this season.

“Emily is very competitive and mature beyond her years,” Gardner said in a release from IU Athletics. “She’ll have some bumps just like everybody else, but she’s talented and at this point we have an opportunity to do something special.”

While at Evansville Mater Dei High School, Goodin was a two-time Evansville Courier & Press All-Metro Player of the Year. She led the state of Indiana in strikeouts in 2016 as a junior, recording 306 of them along with an 18-4 record.

Goodin struck out 11 batters in the Class 2A state championship game as Evansville Mater Dei won its first state title last season. She also contributed offensively for Evansville Mater Dei with six home runs and a batting average of .373 during her junior year.

Outside of her high school career, Goodin played for the Indiana Dreams, reaching the Premier Girls Fastpitch Premier Nationals in 2016.

IU softball will begin its 2017 season on Feb. 10 by participating in the Kajikawa Classic tournament in Tempe, Arizona. The Hoosiers went 29-25 last season, an improvement of 12 wins from their 2015 record.
