Man arrested for possession of three different drugs

Police arrested a Spencer, Indiana, man Friday on a number of drug charges after finding him unconscious in a car, the result of an apparent overdose.

Derek Curvin, 22, faces three charges for possession of heroin, possession of a synthetic drug or lookalike substance — spice — and possession of a controlled substance — Xanax. He also faces three preliminary charges for possession of paraphernalia. He was booked into the Monroe County Jail at 6:38 p.m. Friday.

A Bloomington Police Department officer initially responded to a call about an unconscious man on North Jacob Drive, BPD Sgt. George Connolly said.

Curvin was slumped over in his car and did not appear to be breathing. He did not respond when the officer pounded on the car door, Connolly said.

The officer opened the unlocked door and removed Curvin, who remained unconscious. A baggie containing what appeared to be spice and an unidentified amount of heroin were in the vehicle. A Xanax pill, two smoking devices and a scale were also found in the car, Connolly said.

Curvin received treatment at IU Health Bloomington Hospital and was later booked in to jail. He had been wanted in a separate case in Owen County, Connolly said.
