EDITORIAL: 8 Tips for freshman year you must know

Tips for freshman

1. Get involved — Your college years are the best time to figure out what you want in life and from yourself. Honestly, what have you got to lose? Find your passion and join the organization for it. Plus, you’ll meet tons of new people, and hurrah for more friends, right? Oh, and not to mention there is almost always free food involved.

2. Be safe — This is probably the most important. Never walk alone, especially at night, and use the buddy system. Always be aware of your surroundings and never leave a drink unattended while at a party. Also, never be afraid to call 911 for help.

3. Go to the gym — You don’t realize this, but IU’s two exercise facilities are already included in your tuition. It’d be a complete waste not to take full advantage. Also, the freshman 15 is a real, serious matter. So, hit the gym and you’ll thank us later.

4. Don’t skip class — You know another thing that you paid for? Your classes. This should be common sense, but sadly it still happens. You or your family are paying thousands of dollars for your education. Don’t waste it and have your parents disown you because you decided to get tacos instead of going to class.

5. Use IU’s resources — There are so many resources IU has to offer for basically anything you need — usually for free. Need computer help? Go to University Information Technology Services in the library. The library has tons of resources, too, like books, printers, computers, etc. Have a medical issue or need someone to talk to? Go to Counseling and Psychological Services for your two free sessions per semester. Need a ride? Use our free bus system and track the bus on the free DoubleMap app. IU does a fantastic job of providing plentiful resources for its students, and you shouldn’t let them go to waste.

6. Know your plan — Mainly know which courses you need to take to stay on track for graduation. Advisers are there for a reason, but you’re going to be expected to know your course of action. Advisers help you confirm you’re on the right track. However, they are more than willing to help guide you if you are confused.

7. Get to know your professors — Yeah, we know you don’t want to be “teacher’s pet,” but there really is no such thing in college. Professors have so much knowledge to offer and can provide awesome connections and recommendation letters for you if you get to know them personally.

8. Have fun — Yes, college is about getting an education, but that doesn’t mean you can’t also have some fun while you’re at it. Don’t stay inside studying all day. Luckily, you chose a university in a gorgeous town with great people and tons of fun things to do. IU has so much to offer, so be safe, get out there and seize the day.
