IU beats Stanford 4-3

Senior catcher Brad Hartong threw out a potential base-stealer to help senior Ryan Halstead close the door in the bottom of the 10th inning to seal the second win in as many games this season for the Hoosiers.

It was Halstead’s second save, as IU beat Stanford 4-3 in 10 innings.

Junior Christian Morris got the start for IU, and pitched 5.2 innings giving up just two runs on five hits, while striking out three. He was replaced by freshman Austin Foote who finished the sixth.

Sophomore Thomas Belcher pitched the next three innings, not allowing a run. He was faced with two runners on and just one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, but worked out of the jam to send the game to extra innings.

In the tenth, senior Will Nolden walked, and that was followed by back-to-back bunts by seniors Scott Donely and Hartong. Both bunts went to the pitcher Quinn Brodey, who overthrew each bunt, allowing the runners to get on, and get Nolden home for the go-ahead run.

Sophomore Craig Dedelow then singled home what would be the winning run.

Junior Marc Brakeman started for Stanford and pitched six innings. He also allowed just two runs, only one earned, on four hits and struck out six.

Shortstop Tommy Edman paced the Cardinal with two hits and an RBI.

Game three is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday and can heard on iuhoosiers.com.
