HALF: IU leads Minnesota 44-38

IU’s winning the game, but it may have lost Troy Williams.

The Hoosiers took a 44-38 lead into the halftime locker room despite an injury to their sophomore forward.

With 4:37 left in the first half of Sunday’s game against Minnesota, freshman guard James Blackmon Jr. took a 3 from the right wing. The shot missed, and Williams corralled the rebound at the left elbow. He took one hard dribbled and drove, but was hit on his way to the rim.

On his way down, Williams clashed with teammate Max Hoetzel and Minnesota’s Elliott Eliason. He held his head and remained on the floor as Assembly Hall went quiet.

IU Coach Tom Crean and trainers jogged out and took a knee by the sophomore forward. After a few minutes on the floor, he got up and walked to the locker room under his own power, rubbing his head.

Freshman guard James Blackmon Jr. led IU with 11 points in the half, hitting three of IU’s eight 3-pointers. The Hoosiers shot 8-of-17 from long distance.

Despite playing the final five minutes without its leading rebounder, IU holds a 19-9 advantage on the glass. It pulled in six offensive rebounds in the first period.

Junior guard Yogi Ferrell is on pace for a career-high assist total with six in the first half. His career high is 10, recorded during his freshman season.
