?Murphy named a Bobby Bowden Award Finalist

IU graduating senior safety Mark Murphy was named one of three finalists for the Seminole Tribe of Florida Bobby Bowden Award, the organization announced Monday.

The Bowden Award recognizes the FBS player who most epitomizes a student-athlete. Murphy is joined by Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty and Mississippi defensive lineman D.T. Shackleford as finalists.

Murphy finished his career with 279 tackles, 174 solo, seven for a loss, four interceptions, including two returned for touchdowns and nine pass breakups.

Following his senior season, Murphy earned a spot on the Capital One Academic All-America Division I football first team for the second-straight season, becoming the third Hoosier ever to do so twice.

Through 11 starts in 2014, Murphy made 49 tackles, 2.5 for a loss and had two interceptions. He was a four-time game captain and was named IU’s team Defensive Player of the Week twice, including after the Hoosiers’ 31-27 upset of No. 18 Missouri.

The Akron, Ohio native was one of 17 National Football Foundation Scholar-Athletes, as well as a finalist for the 2014 William V. Campbell Trophy. He was also one of 30 finalists for the Senior CLASS Award.

The Bowden Award is named after former Florida State University head football coach Bobby Bowden.

All three finalists will attend the College Championship breakfast on Sunday, Jan. 11 where the Fellowship of Christian Athletes will name the Award recipient.
