Sigma Lambda Gamma to hold first Gamma Gives Back Week

From IDS reports

Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc. is hosting a textbook drive as part of its Gamma Gives Back Week.

Sigma Lambda Gamma’s motto is “culture is pride, pride is success.” Through this book drive, Sigma Lambda Gamma is aiming to educate and empower children, Vice President Kerri Reese said.

“We feel that if children are culturally aware of their surroundings, whether it’s their own culture or their peers’ cultures, they can always succeed because they know what the world entails,” Reese said.

Through the nonprofit organization Better World Books , the donated books will go to children in third world countries. Any books that cannot be sent will be sold online, and the profits will be donated back to Better World Books, Reese said.

Students can donate textbooks to collection locations at the La Casa Latino Cultural Center, the education building and the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center.

Gamma Gives Back Week is new this year, but the sorority plans to make it an annual practice, Reese said. Gamma Gives Back week will also include a cultural cooking event today from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

The sisters of Sigma Lambda Gamma will be making a variety of recipes from their national chapter’s cultural cookbook. The event will be free to students and will take place at La Casa.

On Saturday, Gamma Gives Back week will continue with a road clean up outside of the sorority house.

“We’re trying to give back to the community, trying to give back to children, trying to give back by cleaning up and trying to give back to our campus by showing the diversity that IU has,” Reese said.
