Police chase recovers stolen vehicle

Monroe County deputies chased a suspect in a stolen vehicle for more than 20 miles away from Bloomington into Morgan County Wednesday.

County deputies received a call just before 10 a.m. about a stolen car, Monroe County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Michael Pershing said.

Shortly after the vehicle was reported stolen, county deputies saw a vehicle matching the description on North Walnut Street.

The driver refused to pull over and headed north on State Road 37, Pershing said. The Morgan County Sheriff’s Department and Indiana State Police assisted in the pursuit after the suspect crossed the county line into Morgan County.

The suspect was taken into custody after blowing past State Road 44 on 37 into Martinsville and driving over stop sticks, which are devices routinely used by police during chases to gradually deflate tires.

Around 1 p.m. Wednesday the suspect had not been booked into the Monroe County jail yet, Pershing said, but he expected the suspect would be charged with resisting arrest and possession of a stolen vehicle.
