Trial date set for former University athlete

A trial date for Devan Dumes, a former IU men’s basketball player who is facing attempted murder charges, among others, has been set for Monday in Marion Superior Court.

Dumes, who played on the men’s basketball team from 2008 to 2010, had a final pre-trial hearing Tuesday, which confirmed the trial date.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Dumes is facing multiple charges in connection with a Jan. 11 incident when he allegedly shot a man, identified as Keith Jones, in the neck after a supposed car sale between the two near West 39th Street and Graceland Avenue in Indianapolis.

According to the affidavit, Jones said Dumes entered his vehicle, displayed a handgun and shot him in the neck. During a struggle over the handgun, Jones allegedly bit Dumes on the hand.

The handgun then fell to the floor and Dumes exited the vehicle.

Jones drove himself to Wishard Memorial Hospital in Indianapolis, where he was listed in critical condition, according to the affidavit.

Dumes was the team’s leading scorer during Coach Tom Crean’s first season, averaging 12.7 points per game.

A court clerk said jury selection begins Monday morning, and the trial is scheduled for later the same day.
