Four IU professors will take part in an Academic Leadership Program during the 2013-14 school year, according to a press release.
The program develops leadership potential for faculty who have demonstrated an active interest in academic administration.
It was established in 1989 with the encouragement of Herman B Wells and is specifically oriented to prepare faculty members to address the challenges of academic administration at major research universities.
“Indiana University Bloomington is committed to providing support for faculty as they consider a move into administrative positions,” Tom Gieryn, vice provost for faculty and academic affairs, said in the release.
“Participation in the Academic Leadership Program will provide the 2013-14 fellows with training and skills that will help them be even more effective in their leadership roles,” he said.
The Committee on Institutional Cooperation sponsors the program. CIC is a consortium of current and future universities of the Big Ten conference plus the University of Chicago.
The IU faculty members selected to participate in the program are Claude Clegg, David Leake, Lesa Hatley Major and Michael Reece.
Claude Clegg
A professor of history in the College of Arts and Sciences, Clegg focuses on the African diaspora of the Atlantic world in his research, according to the release. He is the author of several books and is currently working on his fourth book, which examines the Obama presidency. He previously served as chair of the IU Department of History and as an associate dean in the IU College of Arts and Sciences.
David Leake
Leake, executive associate dean and professor of computer science in the School of Informatics and Computing, is also an associate of the IU Data to Insight Center and member of the faculty of the university’s Cognitive Science program. He has written or edited more than 150 publications and is editor-in-chief of AI Magazine, the official magazine of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, and is a recipient of the IU Trustees’ Teaching Award, according to the release.
Lesa Hatley Major
Hatley Major recently began her tenure as interim dean of the School of Journalism on July 1. She previously served as executive associate dean of the school, which she joined in 2006. she worked in radio and television news as a general reporter, health reporter, assistant news director and anchor, according to the release. She previously taught at Louisiana State University and Northwestern State University.
Michael Reece
Reece is associate dean and a professor of applied health science in the School of Public Health. He is also co-director of the Center for Sexual Health Promotion and serves as a faculty member in the African Studies Program, according to the release. Reece serves as president of the North American Federation of Sexuality Organizations and is president-elect of the Society for the Scientific Study of
Sexuality.
