10 best in musical stand-up

Flight of the Conchords

Though a chair is often involved in these comedy acts, the following is a list of the best names “musical stand-up” has to offer:

Flight of the Conchords

It’s unlikely you haven’t encountered at least one cult fan of their self-titled TV show. These Kiwi legends are masters of the poker face. They use anything from disco to rap to woo the ladies, and in one instance, to woo each other. After all, “why can’t a heterosexual guy tell a heterosexual guy that his booty is fly?”

Henry Phillips

A gravelly, deadpan guitar god. His semi-autobiographical movie “Punching the Clown” is a hilarious inside look at trying to make it big as a comedian in Tinsel Town. He also has new YouTube series called “You and Your Fucking Coffee,” a subtle tale of how one man ruins lives with his need for java.

Nick Thune

If you cross smarmy and charming, you get this smarming comedian. This guy knows how to smoothly pick a guitar with a suave undercurrent of sarcasm.

Garfunkel and Oates

Kate Micucci shreds a means uke. She and her partner Riki Lindhome innocently chirp about handjobs and sex with ducks. Their whip-smart lyrics deal with vaginal troubles, exploring sexuality through go-karts, gay boyfriends and the justification of premarital sex. Live sets include a routine where audience members guess “Who Said It: Kanye or Hitler?”

Bo Burnham

If you’re willing to feel equally inadequate and inspired, this guy’s songs are riddled with wit and wordplay. His cynicism can work magic, whether it’s a glorious pocketful of glitter or making math fun. There are few things more impressive than watching the way he eviscerates interrupting hecklers.

Reggie Watts

Comedy nerds probably recognize his afro poof from the duo Comedy Bang! Bang!, or the gentle stylings of the intro to the television series “Louie.” There’s got to be a brain of equal size under there. A NASA scientist couldn’t navigate this man’s looping machinery with such precision. Or improvisational wit.

Eli Braden

Who better to rap about the humiliation of Ed Hardy T-shirts than a chubby, bearded white guy? The intercuts of MLK protest footage are sure to incite a rallying cry around this fashion injustice.

Mindy Raf

Imagine Snow White’s pitch and Phoebe Buffay’s limited knowledge of guitar chords. And a general ridiculing of male failures.

Tim Minchin

Not everyone who looks like a pirate-Beetlejuice is crazy. One of them is a pianist with witty lyrical insight into human frailty.

Hard ‘n Phirm

Shameless nerd kings Chris Hardwick and Mike Phirman join up to sing odes to their favorite “Ermahgerd” meme featuring an ingenious cameo by the Muppets’ Swedish Chef. Their riffy confidence and extensive podcast themes have built a loyal fan base to entertain between their own independent acts.
