IU Trustee MaryEllen Bishop, Ann DeLaney seek board position

In alumni voting running from June 1 to 29, current IU Trustee MaryEllen Kiley Bishop will face candidate Ann McGovern DeLaney, former state Democratic Party Chair, for the trustee position, according to a press release. Degree-holders from all IU campuses are eligible to vote in the upcoming election for the position on the Board of Trustees.

Bishop has served one term on the Board of Trustees. While on the board, Bishop has chaired the external relations committee and served on the facilities and academic affairs committees, according to the release. She is an Indianapolis attorney who resides in Carmel, Ind. DeLaney, also an Indianapolis attorney, is a former president of the Maurer School of Law board of visitors, and a member of the Academy of Law Alumni fellows, IU Foundation Presidents Circle, Varsity Club and Alumni Association, according to the release. She served as a deputy prosecuting attorney for Marion County, ran for lieutenant governor in 1984 and chaired the state Democratic Party from 1993 to 1995. She was the first woman to head either political party in Indiana, according to the release.

Three of the nine trustees are elected by IU graduates, one each year for a three-year term. Indiana’s governor, currently Mike Pence, appoints the remaining six trustees, including the student board member.

On Monday, June 3, a candidate forum will be webcast live at 7 p.m. at broadcast.iu.edu and will be moderated by Perry Metz, director of radio and television services at IU.
