Homeless man attacks resident in apartment

A homeless man faces felony charges of burglary and aggravated battery following an attack at an apartment building in which he was formerly employed.

The victim, who lives on the 600 block of South Fess Avenue, attempted to enter his residence at about 10:13 p.m. Monday when the suspect, a former maintenance man in the building, allegedly attacked him with a severed table leg, said Lt. Bill Parker.

The suspect, Parker said, forced his way into the apartment.

Parker said the victim suffered a broken arm and was treated for lacerations.
The suspect fled the scene, leaving behind belongings, but was apprehended on the premises at about 3 a.m. Tuesday, Parker said.

The victim told police his attacker had been living in a hallway in the same
building.

Parker said he is unsure what provoked the attack.
