Freshman gets 5th Big Ten honor

Sam Travis, freshman first baseman for the Hoosiers, was awarded his third Big Ten Freshman of the Week recognition on Monday. This is Travis’ fifth overall Big Ten conference weekly award.

The Big Ten Conference awards a Player, Pitcher and Freshman of the Week each Monday throughout the season. Indiana now leads after 12 weeks with 11 honorees, including Freshman of the Week winners Chris Sujka, Kyle Schwarber and Kyle Hart; Pitcher of the Week Joen DeNato; and Player of the Week Justin Cureton. Close behind are Purdue with 10, Illinois with five and Michigan State with four.

The Hoosiers moved into second place in conference standings this weekend after winning the three-game series against Nebraska. Travis helped move the Hoosiers upward with six hits, a home run and a double. He slugged .833 during the series and now has a .500 batting average, as well as a .571 on-base percentage. Travis also recorded a 1.000 fielding percentage at first base through all three games during the weekend.
