Movement members sworn-in as IU Student Association leadership

Through the large stained-glass windows of the Indiana Memorial Union’s Tudor Room, the sun was setting. It was the final time Justin Kingsolver would make a speech as IU Student Association student body president before the new administration would
assume office.

On Thursday night, the Movement for IUSA executive staff was sworn-in by IUSA Supreme Court Chief Justice Tara Maloney during the 2012-13 inauguration.

“It’s surreal that it’s finally here,” President Kyle Straub said. “It’s been months in the waiting, so it’s so great to finally be able to start.”

Kingsolver opened the evening with a speech in which he said that too often people think of IUSA as a president-centric organization.

“This isn’t the IU Student Association, it’s the IU Students’ Association,” Kingsolver said. “Its truly a team effort.”

He reviewed some of his administration’s biggest accomplishments of the year, including Hoosier P.A.C.T., the Lifeline Law and the digital signage in the Herman B Wells Library, and he thanked his executive staff and the administrators in attendance.

Before his closing, Kingsolver offered Straub a piece of advice.

“Stay true to your instincts, they’re good ones,” he said.

He described the incoming administration as a team of dreamers.

Dean of Students Harold “Pete” Goldsmith gave the keynote address, focusing on the success of the Lifeline Law and challenging the next administration to do the same.

Following the swearing-in, Straub gave a speech.

“Three years ago I never would have seen this coming,” Straub said. “I was a musical theatre major expecting to be the next Broadway star.”

From there, Straub reviewed his administration’s platform and went further to explain his intent to continue a partnership with student advocacy group Hoosier Youth Advocacy, add a greater voice to the student body through town hall-style meetings, continue the freshmen internship program and revitalize the IUSA Congress.

Movement for IUSA will move into the IUSA Office in the IMU this weekend.

“It won’t set in until I move all my stuff, and I’m sitting at a different desk in the office,” Straub said.
