Campus statues don afros for concert promotion

Beginning this morning, some iconic statues around campus will sport giant afros.

Derrick Cowit, a Bloomington concert promoter who has been working on the Afrojack show, said the “Afrojack Afrohunt” will result in five sets of two tickets being given away for free.

He said the afros will be hard to miss.

“They are giant, straight-off-of-the-heads-of-Harlem-Globetrotters afros,” Cowit said. “The statues around campus will wear the afro, and the first person to find it and tweet a picture or description @AfroJacklil5 will win the tickets.”

The afros are part of a concert promotion for the upcoming State of Emergency concert that features Afrojack.

The concert will take place at 6 p.m. April 18 in the Memorial Stadium parking lot.
Clues, which will provide hints about where the afros can be found, will be tweeted from the official Little 500 Afrojack Twitter handle, @AfroJacklil5.

Cowit said the first clue will be released at 10 a.m. today and will be relatively easy to figure out.

The campaign was formulated by the Professional Tourism Management Club, a student organization that provides its members with event-planning experience, to drive interaction with the concert’s social media accounts.

The club collaborates with other student organizations to help with promotions and publicity.

Cowit said the Afrohunt is only one of the ideas by the PTMC that will be implemented in the weeks leading up to the concert.

He said more promotions will be present in local bars and around Bloomington.
